Temporary Housing After a Natural Disaster — Your Questions Answered
We know the journey after a natural disaster can be overwhelming. You’re trying to navigate insurance claims, secure your property, and keep life moving forward — all while processing the emotional toll of what happened. The last thing you should have to worry about is where you and your family will live during this time. At Cocoon Homes, we’ve worked with individuals and families across the West Coast who have faced natural diasters. Our homes have provided safe, comfortable spaces for people to live in while they rebuild — without feeling like they’ve had to “settle” for something temporary. Whether you need a space for a year or five, our goal is to give you a home that supports stability, comfort, and peace of mind until you’re ready for your permanent home again. Below, we’ve answered some of the most common questions we hear from disaster survivors considering our homes for a transitional living solution.
Do you work with governments and nonprofit groups to provide temporary housing relief?
Absolutely! We believe that collaborating with federal, state, and local governments—as well as nonprofit organizations—is essential to delivering fast, effective, and sustainable housing solutions to those in need.
By partnering with government agencies to create multiple units or even entire communities of tiny homes, we achieve economies of scale that help lower costs for users through savings on materials and repeat labor.
If you’re with a government agency or nonprofit, please reach out! We’re always eager to adapt our approach and work together to be a meaningful part of your local housing solution.
For individuals, gathering letters of interest (LOIs) from your community to show demand for Cocoon Homes can be a powerful way to get the government’s attention and make your voice heard.
Together, we can build solutions that bring stability and hope to communities recovering from challenging times.
How quickly can I get a home and have it ready to live in?
Our timelines depend on availability and whether you choose a stock model or a customized build — but we understand the urgency in situations like yours. We prioritize disaster recovery clients whenever possible, and in some cases, we can have you moved into a home within just a few weeks. If your property is ready for placement, setup is quick.
We also maintain a growing fleet of homes that can be deployed to different areas as needed. While these homes are typically rentals and less customizable, they can often be delivered and set up within days if available.
How do your rentals work?
Our rental homes are part of a mobile fleet built and managed through a fund backed by a group of investors. They’re fully furnished, move-in ready, and designed for temporary housing needs — especially for individuals and families who have lost their homes in a natural disaster.
Many of our rentals can qualify for rental assistance through FEMA, insurance companies, local and state government programs, and nonprofit grants. Contracts are typically at least 12 months, with the option to renew in additional 6–12 month periods.
To qualify, applicants must:
- Have lost their home in a natural disaster
- Meet standard tenant qualifications
- Be willing to follow appropriate tenant standards
We handle transportation, setup, and removal at the end of the rental period, making the process as seamless as possible.
Can the home be placed on my property while I rebuild?
Yes — in most cases, we can place the home directly on your property, allowing you to stay close to the rebuild process, monitor progress, and remain in your own community. If your site isn’t immediately ready due to debris, grading, or utility repairs, we can arrange short-term placement elsewhere until your property is prepared.
In some areas, the city or county may have specifically designated land available for your Cocoon, if that’s a better fit for your situation.
Will this actually feel like a “real home” or just a glorified RV?
Absolutely — our homes are built to feel like a true home, not a stopgap. They have full kitchens, bathrooms, comfortable sleeping spaces, and thoughtful layouts designed for everyday living. Our goal is for clients in recovery to proclaim they quickly forgot they were in a “temporary” space because of how cozy, functional, and personalized it felt.
Across the West Coast — and in communities across the U.S. and the world — people live full-time in tiny homes by choice. You can rest assured that our designs prioritize livability for long-term comfort, even in challenging times.
Are your homes safe and durable enough for my area’s weather conditions?
Absolutely. Our homes are engineered to withstand a wide range of conditions—from heavy snow loads in the mountains to intense summer heat in the desert. We’ve built units that have stood strong during West Coast windstorms, coastal rain seasons, and deep freezes.
If your area is prone to severe weather (high winds, heavy snow, extreme heat), we can upgrade insulation, roofing, and anchoring systems to match your needs. We work with you to ensure your home is safe, comfortable, and built for your environment, whether you’re in a coastal zone, a rural property, or a high-elevation rebuild site.
What if my property doesn’t have full hookups yet?
We have solutions for that. Our homes can be adapted for off-grid or semi-off-grid living while utilities are being restored. This may include water tanks, generators, or solar options, depending on your needs. We’ll walk you through what’s required and help you choose the setup that works best for your situation.
What happens to the home when I’m ready to move back into my rebuilt house?
You have several options:
Sell it — Many people in your situation have successfully sold their home to another family in need, often recouping much of their investment.
Keep it — Turn it into a guest house, home office, or short-term rental for extra income.
Move it — Take it to a vacation property or another piece of land for continued use.
**If you are in a temporary rental tiny home, we will arrange tranport to pick up the home when the lease agreement is over.
Our 100–500 series homes are all built on trailers and can be moved as needed. If you plan to move frequently, the 100 Series (8.5 ft wide) is easiest for travel without oversize permitting.
Can your homes work off-grid if utilities aren’t available yet?
Yes. Many of our clients in remote or post-disaster areas choose off-grid packages so they’re not dependent on damaged local infrastructure. We offer solutions such as:
- Generator or solar power systems with battery storage
- Sewage holding takes or Composting or incinerating toilets if sewer or septic isn’t ready
- Water holding tanks for water storage and use
These options mean you can live comfortably—even if the power company, water department, or gas lines are still months away from being restored.
Can your homes be moved later if I only need them temporarily?
Yes. All of our homes from the 100–500 Series are built on trailers with standard ball hitches, so they can be moved to a new location.
If you plan to move your home often or use it for travel, our 100 Series (8.5’ wide) is easiest to maneuver and doesn’t require oversize permits.
Our 10’ wide models offer more living space but require oversize permitting when moved on public roads.
Once you’re done using the home as your primary residence, you can move it onto another property, sell it, or keep it as a guest house or rental.
Will these homes feel too small for me or my family?
It’s natural to wonder if you can truly feel “at home” in a smaller space—especially during a stressful time. The good news? Thousands of people across the U.S. and around the world live happily in tiny and small modular homes, and many of our clients on the West Coast have transitioned comfortably after losing a larger home.
Our designs focus on maximizing space, light, and storage so they feel open and functional. With thoughtful layouts, full kitchens, real bathrooms, and comfortable sleeping spaces, you’ll have everything you need to live well while you rebuild—without feeling cramped.
