Which Brands Offer Customizable Tiny Homes on Wheels? What to Compare
"Customizable" is one of the most overused words in the tiny home industry. Every brand says they offer customization. But what does that actually mean — and how do you compare what different companies are really offering?
Here's a practical breakdown of what to look for when you're shopping for a customizable THOW.
What "Customizable" Actually Means
At the basic level, customizable means you can choose from a set of floor plans and pick your finishes — countertop color, cabinet style, maybe a loft vs. ground-level bedroom. That's table stakes.
At the higher end, truly customizable means you're involved in the design from the ground up. Custom floor plan. Custom trailer. Your choice of materials, systems, and layout. That's a very different product — and a very different price.
What to Compare When Shopping
When you're looking at different brands or builders, here's what actually matters:
Floor plan options. How many layouts do they offer? Can you modify them, or are they fixed? The more flexibility, the better the customization.
Material and finish choices. Can you choose your own materials, or are you limited to a menu? High-end customization means you bring your own vision. Cookie-cutter customization means you pick from Option A, B, or C.
Trailer design. This matters more than most people realize. A standard THOW trailer has wheel wells that eat into your living space. A custom trailer — like ours at Cocoon Homes — can eliminate that issue entirely. The tongue design also affects how the home looks once it's set.
What's included in the price. Does "customizable" include delivery? Site setup? Permit navigation? Or is the custom home just the structure, and everything else is extra? Always get a full scope-of-work quote, not just a headline price.
Build-to-order timeline. A fully custom home takes longer than a prefab or kit. Expect 4–8 months for a custom professional build. If someone promises faster, ask what they're cutting.
Certification. Can the customized home still qualify for RV classification, RVIA certification, or ANSI standards? Customization shouldn't mean losing access to financing and insurance options.
What Sets Cocoon Apart
At Cocoon Homes, customization isn't an add-on — it's the whole point. Every home we build starts with a design conversation. We work with you on layout, materials, systems (off-grid or hookup), and finishes. Our custom trailers are engineered to maximize living space and look permanent once set.
We build from $55,000 to $115,000, ship nationwide, and handle land development at cost.
